911

Today is the eighth anniversary and every year I remember what I was doing when I heard. At the time, I worked in a small office and we were all gathered in the lunch room watching what we thought was a tragic accident when we saw the second plane hit. I remember looking at a co-worker as realization that it was no accident dawned upon us.

Most people would tell you that my memory isn’t very good but my memories of that day are still very clear. The shock and horror at what will be remembered as one of the worst days in US history is still there. It is something I will never forget. It is something none of us should ever forget.

Summer Reading for Schools

School started here yesterday and my daughter had her first test on one of the books assigned for summer reading. I won't mention the titles but I will say the books were extremely boring and one of them was almost impossible to follow. My daughter read them because I made her but many of her friends didn't read their books. I'm wondering why can't they assign books that a teen might actually enjoy reading. Forcing students to read books that hold no appeal certainly won't teach them a love of books.

I was never assigned summer reading as a child but I read for the love of it. Very few, if any of my daughter's friends read for fun. If schools made better selections on assigned reading, I wondering would that change?

Have a wonderful weekend!

Reading at the Beach

Over the last couple of years I have cut way back on my paperback book purchases in favor of ebooks. But in preparation for my trip to the beach I purchased a few paperbacks. Let's face it, taking a laptop or ebook reader down to the beach near water and sand isn't practical. So, on my first day I happily read for an hour or so before taking a break. I left my book in my chair but when I returned an hour or so later I found my daughter had thrown it off the chair and the surf had come in far enough to lap at the pages. One book down!

The next day, I decided to try again but warned my daughter not to touch my book. I almost took the book with me as I returned to the beach house but my chair was a safe distance from the water and I only planned a short break. Upon returning to my chair, I discovered my book missing. Now, I've lost my second book and I'm not very happy.

Of course, I would have been more upset if my ebook reader got wet or was stolen but still it seems that reading on the beach doesn't work for me.

Instead, I managed to read a few ebooks from the comfort and safety of the deck. Thank goodness for the convenience of downloading ebooks.

Have a good one,

Oaks Day

Hey,

It's Oaks Day here in Kentucky. That is the day before the Derby. I don't know how many of you are horse racing fans but it's a great time of year here. Last weekend we had Thunder Over Louisville, which is an airshow and fireworks...awesome to see. During the week there are balloon races, steamboat races, parades and so forth. If you ever want to visit Louisville this is the time of year to do it.

Unfortunately, we've been having a bit of rain but the show goes on regardless. I'm not going to the track this year but I will attend a party and put a few dollars on the horses. Wish me luck.

WTF??

Lately, life has seems full of disappointments. We went to my favorite Chinese restaurant the other day. I’ve been going to this place since I was a teenager…that’s a long time. I have told so many people about this place because they have the most awesome fried rice. Everyone that I referred there has agreed. They are the best…or they used to be. They changed the recipe or something because the rice was okay but nothing special. I asked a couple friends that had been there lately and they agreed. WTF! Why do you change something that is perfect?

Then, I bought a book by one of my favorite authors. I won’t say who but I love this author. Guess what the book was okay but not nearly as good as most of the books by this author. I’ll still buy the next book by this author though. We all have books that are better than others. I know I do. I was just surprised because this author had never disappointed me before.

So, I thought to cheer myself up I’d take a trip to my favorite store. It sells clothes for larger women that I like. Yeah! You guessed it. They didn’t have hardly anything I liked.

Now, I’m wondering is it me???

The one thing that hasn’t disappointed me lately though is my amazingly supportive family and friends. And, if you have that what else do you need.

Hope everyone has a great weekend with few disappointments.

Obsession

Definition of obsession: An obsession is an unwelcome, uncontrollable, and persistent idea, thought, image, or emotion that a person cannot help thinking even though it creates significant distress or anxiety.

Lately, I've had alot going on in my real world and I have become obsessed with one aspect of my life. The problem is that the obsession doesn't change anything and I am accomplishing nothing.

Sitting here, I am thinking back over the last month or so and I realize I have been spinning my wheels so to speak. I've let something beyond my control take over my life. I haven't written much, chatted, updated sites, blogged or accomplished any of my usual tasks.

I've decided to do my best not to worry about what I can't control and concentrate on what I can do. Sounds easy...not!

Has anyone else become obsessed with something in their life, a story line or research?

Love Scene Presentation

Next Saturday I’ve been asked to give a presentation at my local RWA chapter on writing love scenes. Those of you that know me know I’m an introvert and hate public speaking but I agreed to do it anyway.

From reading blogs and assorted articles I know that writing love scenes is the worst nightmare of many writers. However, I don’t feel that way. I enjoy writing love/sex scenes. I probably enjoy writing them more than most scenes if you’ve read any of my work you probably guessed that. LOL

Now, I’m wondering what you all think. Do you enjoy writing love scenes? If not why?
Any information you can provide will help me with delivering an effective and helpful presentation.

Just a reminder, my Giveaway is still going on.
From now until February 28, 2009 buy any L.A. Day ebook from Ellora’s Cave or Cobblestone Press for a chance to win a new Sony PRS 505 ebook reader or signed copies of Warriors in Time. Complete details are on the fun/free page of my site.

Out of my slump!

Between my surgery, complications, hormones & power outages it seems the fates have conspired against me in recent months. However, yesterday for the first time in several months, I submitted a manuscript to Ellora’s Cave and I almost have the sequel to it completed as well.

I’ve always heard of writer’s block but this is the first time I’ve experienced it for any length of time. It’s not something I want to experience again…ever. Although, I do realize I most likely will. Hopefully, I’ll have long stretches of productivity between the slumps.

In the past, if I wasn’t in the mood to write, I’d pick up a good book and read. That usually did the trick. Didn’t work this time though but I did get to read a few good books. I won’t complain about that.

During my slump, I started and stopped several manuscripts as I attempted to find inspiration. Now, I have seven partially completed manuscripts and my slump appears to be over. Keeping my fingers crossed.

So any writer’s block stories out there? How long did it last and what did you do to get the creative juices flowing again?

Have an awesome weekend!

Power has returned!

I'm thrilled to say that my power is back on. However, I'm now buried in emails and other things I haven't been able to get to. And of course, it's snowing again. Today was the first day in a week that we've had school here and they'll probably release early if it doesn't stop snowing. URGH!!!

I'm ready for Spring!

Ahhh!

It’s a heat wave!

It’s funny how much the weather plays a role in my mood. We’ve been experiencing bitter cold, snow and cloudy skies. I’ve been depressed and unproductive. However, yesterday was beautiful and today it’s going to reach fifty-two degrees and I’ve already been out with the dogs, cleaned up the yard and been to the store. Now, I’m settling into my seat in front of the computer and I feel productive for the first time in a while.

Unfortunately, tomorrow the temperature starts to drop again but I will enjoy today. I plan to take a break this afternoon to walk the dogs again and tonight I’m going out with my DH. I think we are going to see Gran Torino with Clint Eastwood. I love Clint. He would warm me up even on the most frigid night.

So, how does the weather affect your life?

Do you crave sunny skies and warm temps like me?

Whatever the weather, enjoy your weekend.

Minus 2!

It’s unbelievably cold here today. This morning it was minus 2 and we’re expecting a high of 13. WooHoo!! That is extremely cold for my neck of the woods. It’s great weather to stay inside and read a hot book though or maybe to write one too.

Currently, I’m working on the sequel to Undercover Pleasure Droid and it’s keeping me warm. I also purchased a few new books that I intend to read if I meet my writing quota for the day. Next on my list to read is Caramel Kisses by TJ Michaels. It looks yummy.

Anyone have some Hot recommendations?

Enjoy your weekend. Keep safe and warm.
